A permission has already been obtained from the Collegiate Education Department for conversion and renaming as NMKRV College.
In the first year, 20% seats have been reserved for boys and 80% for girls in all undergraduate (UG) and postgraduate (PG) courses. The government has given permission to fill 1,000 seats for first-year UG courses, out of which about 700 seats have already been filled. Out of these, around 140 students are boys.
“The classes will be inaugurated on July 28. All boys and girls will come to the college on Monday,” said Suchitra, principal.
With an aim to encourage education of girls, Meda Kasturiranga Setty and Nagarathnamma Meda Kasturiranga Setty established NMKRV College for Women in 1973.
However, in the changing scenario, the number of students in this college also declined. And, in order to bring inclusiveness in the education system, the college management has taken steps to start co-education.
Now, the college has 14 departments, including UG, PG, Law, BEd, and more than 5,000 students are studying there. However, from this academic year, UG and PG courses have been made co-education. “We wanted to be more inclusive to accommodate people from other gender also,” said Ms. Suchitra.
She stated that at an earlier time, people were unwilling to send girl children to co-education college. “Even now we prefer more girls and we accommodate only 20% boys. The first priority is always women,” she added.
The college management had converted NMKRV Junior College into co-education in 2018.
