The asteroid that Japan’s Hayabusa2 spacecraft will meet and land on in 2031 is significantly smaller and rotating much faster than originally believed. These new observations of KY26 were reported on September 18. The asteroid, known as KY26, was previously estimated by astronomers to be about 30 metres (98 feet) wide and to rotate once every ten minutes, based on brightness observations. “We found that the object’s reality is completely different from what it was previously described as,” said Toni Santana-Ros, an astronomer at the University of Alicante who is also affiliated with the University of Barcelona and led the…
Tens of millions of people were in the path of totality when the 2024 total solar eclipse passed over the eastern and central U.S., southeastern Canada and central Mexico last spring. In addition to the more than 43 million people who live within that path of totality, an estimated 4+ million eclipse chasers traveled to see the natural phenomenon in person. In 2024, the eclipse pass over or near major cities, like Montréal and Austin, making it easier for umbraphiles, (dedicated eclipse chasers) to access prime viewing spots. The 2026 Total Solar Eclipse, however, will be a more remote experience.…

The 18 per cent GST on temporary staffing services — often an input cost for firms — will create an anomaly after the recent cut in levies on several output goods from 18 per cent and 12 per cent to 5 per cent, Indian Staffing Federation (ISF) President Lohit Bhatia said on Thursday. Flagging the GST inversion, Bhatia urged that the rate be cut to 5 per cent, adding that ISF has raised the issue with the authorities. In 2024-25, 72 lakh workers were employed through tripartite contracts with flexi-staffing firms and client companies across sectors, the ISF said in…
In much of Southeast Asia, the idea of a bar is slowly being reshaped. Instead of music competing with chatter or cocktails, listening rooms are inviting people to slow down, sit back and actually hear what is being played. In Bangkok, the culture is particularly visible. At Siwilai Sound Club in Bang Rak, one floor is reserved for jazz and another for vinyl. Freaking Out the Neighborhood, hidden on Sukhumvit 36, feels more like a friend’s living room than a bar, with albums played whole and a crowd that arrives to listen rather than talk over the music. And then…
AmritsarSeptember 19, 2025 10:31 AM IST First published on: Sep 18, 2025 at 05:30 PM IST The Centre’s decision to restrict Sikh jathas (groups of pilgrims) from travelling to Nankana Sahib in Pakistan for Guru Nanak Dev’s birth anniversary has triggered political reactions across Punjab, with parties and Sikh leaders questioning the rationale of the move, especially as India and Pakistan cricket teams recently faced off in the ongoing Asia Cup. The matter gained prominence after Sri Akal Takht Sahib Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargajj criticised the Centre’s decision to disallow the jathas. “If cricket matches can be played between…
India survived a scare as Oman almost pulled off the biggest upset of the Asia Cup as they thrashed the world champions’ bowling lineup all around the field. While they scraped through with a 21-run victory, India would be pretty concerned about their subpar bowling attack, taking just 4 wickets of Oman who managed to score 167 runs. Aamir Kaleem and Hammad Mirza both scored scintillating half centuries with their 93-run stand broken by Harshit Rana in the 18th over. Before that partnership, captain Jatinder Singh also chipped in with a decent 32-run innings before he was sent back by…
The Netherlands (or Holland, if you prefer) might just be twice the size of New Jersey, but somehow stacks up more variety per square mile than most US states. There are polder farmlands drained by dykes, rolling hills in its far south, and more than 250 miles of wind-whipped dunes hemming its coast.Few of its 20 million annual visitors see beyond Amsterdam’s canal belt, though. They shuffle through the Rijksmuseum, snap some pictures on a bridge, then roll their suitcases back to Schiphol or the Centraal Station, off to the next European capital. But they’re missing out: Even within cycling…
