Felix Baumgartner’s fatal paragliding crash was preceded by large boom as it spun to the ground, according to witnesses.Beachgoers knew something was wrong when they heard a loud boom ring out as a paraglider spun out of control, before killing its only occupant, extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner, when it crashed next to a swimming pool near the Adriatic Sea. A 30-year-old mother watched the deadly descent unfold Thursday afternoon from nearby with her two young children, who were entranced by the constant traffic of paragliders above the beach town of Porto Sant’Elipido in central Italy’s Marche region. “Everything was normal,…

When it comes to railway adventures, there are few things more exciting than falling asleep in one city and waking in the next, nudging up the blind to see what lies outside. Whether that reveals the golden haze of dawn or a moonlit night still holding on, the moment is one that’s always filled with magic. For the last three years I’ve been journeying around Europe documenting the resurgence in sleeper trains, watching passengers drift back to the romance of the railways, eschewing budget flights and bullet trains for cosy couchettes and a slower mode of travel. For scenery, comfort, and…
Berlin calls itself ‘locomotive’ of European crackdown on immigration, expelling 81 Afghans before meeting.Germany’s interior minister has hosted five of his European counterparts to discuss ways of tightening the region’s asylum rules, as his country deported 81 Afghans to their Taliban-controlled homeland. The European Union’s immigration system needed to be “tougher and stricter”, Minister Alexander Dobrindt said after Friday’s meeting in southern Germany with the interior ministers of France, Poland, Austria, the Czech Republic and Denmark, as well as EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner. The cohort issued a five-page communique on their aims, which included the establishment of “return hubs”…
India and the European Union (EU) continue to differ on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS), which govern food and animal safety rules and are key to India’s agricultural and processed food exports to the EU, according to a status report released by the EU on Thursday. This report follows the 12th round of talks earlier this month. This assumes significance as the EU is India’s largest and most premium export destination for agricultural items, particularly coffee, tea, spices and rice. However, India’s exports to the EU have seen limited growth over the years, rising from $3.02 billion in FY19 to…
A still from ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ | Photo Credit: Sony Pictures The best slasher films offer a particular gory comfort, with the chase, deaths and a kind of twisted logic. I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) based on Lois Duncan’s 1973 young adult novel was immense fun and spawned two sequels, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998) and I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer (2006), a series in 2021 and countless headline options to sub-editors. The latest reboot after the show was cancelled, is a sequel to I Still…

A new cyber threat is on the horizon — one that operates without an internet connection. Security researchers have identified Mamona ransomware, a stealthy malware that executes offline, encrypts files using locally generated keys, and erases its tracks, making detection extremely difficult.Unlike traditional ransomware that relies on remote command-and-control servers, Mamona functions entirely offline by abusing the Windows ping command. “Mamona generates encryption keys locally, making it effective even in air-gapped or isolated systems, challenging the belief that offline environments are inherently secure,” said Neehar Pathare, MD of 63SATS Cybertech. “This approach allows attackers to bypass standard network surveillance systems,…
