Even as Parliament’s Select Committee on the new Income Tax Bill retained the digital search and seizure provisions without any significant changes in its report this week, the Income Tax Department is in the process of defining tighter procedures to protect the privacy of the taxpayer after concerns were raised by digital rights activists. In an interview with The Indian Express, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman Ravi Agrawal said the Tax Department is going to issue a manual that will outline the procedure for the analysis of digital evidence. “From a regulatory point of view, statutory permissions are there…
The debate around nepotism in Bollywood shows no signs of dying down. Every now and then, a celebrity adds their voice to the conversation that’s been going on for years. Archana Puran Singh recently started the discussion again on her YouTube channel during a conversation with actor Ajay Devgn. It’s a common piece of advice floating around health circles: drink a glass of water before meals to manage blood sugar levels. Far-Flung Postcards is a weekly series in which NPR’s international team shares moments from their lives and work around the world. The truth is, it’s been years since I visited the mausoleum. But I’ll never forget the first time. 30 years ago. As an exchange student. How my eyes struggled to adjust in the darkness. And then … there he was. Vladimir Lenin. The Russian revolutionary and founder of the Soviet Union. And since his death in 1924, a wonder of chemistry, preserved in his crypt — under glass, asleep in his suit — barring the occasional removal for a…

French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, have filed a defamation lawsuit in Delaware against US rightwing commentator Candace Owens, accusing her of spreading false and malicious claims for personal gain. According to the lawsuit, Owens has repeatedly claimed that Brigitte Macron is a man and alleged that Emmanuel Macron is under the control of the CIA. The Macrons say Owens has used these fabrications to grow her media platform and monetise attention, including through an eight-part podcast series titled Becoming Brigitte. “These outlandish, defamatory, and far-fetched fictions included that Mrs Macron was born a man, stole another…
It’s week three of summer school, government edition. So far this semester we’ve looked at how the government can help make us all richer (or poorer) and how we use taxes to change behavior and show our values. This week — How does the government decide what to do with all the money it collects? Woohoo! Government spending spree! Although it seems like the government can spend an endless amount of money, it cannot actually do all the things it wants to do. So the big question in this week’s lesson is: How do we decide? Why does the government…
