Home Depot stores have been the location of dramatic federal raids targeting day laborers. But the company has largely been quiet.
The Transplantation of Human Organs Act, 1994, has two principal objectives: to regulate the removal, storage, and transplantation of human organs and tissues for therapeutic purposes, and to curb commercial dealings in them. However, organ commerce persisted. One major shortcoming was the absence of a State-led system to procure and distribute donated organs. That changed in 2008, when Tamil Nadu established the Cadaver Transplant Programme (CTP).How T.N’s programme evolvedTamil Nadu became the first state to issue detailed guidelines to certify brain death and allocate donated organs. The Act provided the legal framework; Tamil Nadu operationalised it. Equity was built into the system…

As a child of the ‘70s and ‘80s, I grew up running around barefoot. Fast forward 30 years, and not much has changed; however, when I absolutely have to wear shoes, I reach for an option from my extensive selection of hiking sandals and water shoes. Being on or near water is in my DNA, and as a former rafting and sea kayak guide, I have worn both types of shoes while venturing across six continents (including Antarctica, although I admit I only wore them on the ship). With decades of experience across a broad range of activities under my…

Montooth is a direct descendant of a Stewart Indian School survivor, and though she never attended the school herself, its impact has rippled through generations in her family. “My grandma was four when she was brought [to Stewart], and she was raised in violence by the matrons,” she says. “She never had an opportunity to learn parenting skills from her parents. That experience, in my family at least, was the start of violence, alcoholism, and generational trauma. I have relatives who still will not step foot out here because our grandma was abused on a regular basis.”This experience at Stewart…

Public sector lenders, including the State Bank of India (SBI), Bank of Baroda (BoB) and Indian Overseas Bank (IOB) have reduced their marginal cost of funds-based lending rates (MCLR) by up to 35 basis points (bps) across various tenors. The reduction follows a cumulative reduction of 100 bps in the repo rate to 5.5 per cent by the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) between February and June. In the August monetary policy meeting, the six-member MPC left the repo rate unchanged. One basis point is one hundredth of one percentage point. The country’s largest lender, SBI…
Lana Parrilla and Milo Callaghan in a new TV adaptation of John Grisham’s The Rainmaker. Christopher Barr/USA Network hide caption toggle caption Christopher Barr/USA Network In the broadest sense, John Grisham has written the same story over and over. It goes like this: A decent person finds themselves the David in a David and Goliath story where the opposition is the government, or a shady criminal enterprise, or a huge corporation. That person finds a way, at some cost and compromise, to get what is usually only a partial victory. It has worked, many times over. His books have been…

AP/Getty Images hide caption toggle caption AP/Getty Images The August recess is a time for Congress to put in face time at home, meet with constituents and maybe lay the foundation for a reelection bid. This August, though, is quieter for some Republican members, as they navigate how to message about the One Big Beautiful Bill, President Trump’s signature legislation signed into law in July. Ahead of…
