In March, music composer Amaal Mallik announced on social media that he has cut ties with his family and had been diagnosed with depression. In the long note, he called out his parents Dabboo and Jyoti Malik for creating differences between him and his brother Armaan Malik by being biased. Now, in a recent interview, Daboo has opened up about how he reacted to his son’s post. He also admitted that he was at fault as a parent for making him feel lonely.

During a conversation with Faridoon Shahryar, the music director-singer said, “Baat kisi aur ki thi ya kuch aur rishton ki thi (It was about something else). His love affair with his father can never come to an end. His obsession about his dad is unbelievable. If I have to say it in a single statement, while talking against someone, then you have to talk against the entire family, right?”
Accepting his mistake of not paying equal attention to both his sons, Dabboo shared, “His statements opened our eyes. We realised the mistakes we made. That is where we solidified our relationship. Sometimes, we aren’t able to say things to our own people, you need a medium to break out when things are really going wrong. And, things were going wrong. Me and Jyoti have to take the blame, we were wrong. Maa baap se galti hosakti hai (Mother-father can also be wrong).”
He added, “How can you be biased? How can you not take care of something which is affecting your elder son and you’re not understanding? Toh galti hui na. You got busy and did this. The next 15 days after that, I was in bed with him continuously after 4am. Forget staying in the house, I was in bed with him, because I should at least know what happened. I was not a mature father. I was going through my own problems. I failed as a father and Jyoti failed as a mother.”

The 62-year-old revealed that the whole family was only focused on making Armaan a successful singer. “My problem was that Amaal is a parent with us, taking care of Armaan, our child. We all got fixed to a concept that we have to make atleast one member of the family a singer. Singer banta hai toh family thodi successful hogi (Family would be successful if he becomes a singer). We forgot that we had another star, who deserves that love equally,” he expressed.
Dabboo Malik also recalled the time when he had a “steep fall” in his career, and his elder son Amaal Malik was the one he fell back on. “As a parent, there were moments when I was ready to do absolutely anything for my kids. But, there was a specific moment, I was also surprised, it was such a steep fall. When something big like this happens in life, you don’t even realise what to do next,” he said.

He continued, “An innocent 15-year-old child saw that his father came to him, hugged him, and said, ‘Something similar is happening to me what happened to my father once, you’ll have to save us’. Uss chotte bache ko kaisa laga hoga (How that young child must have felt, I feel really guilty about it now. But he held my hand and said, ‘Dad, I’ll earn’. Armaan was too small to even understand the gravity of the situation.”
Earlier this year, Amaal wrote a long heartbreaking note in his post, which read, “Today I stand at a point where I have been robbed of my peace, drained emotionally & maybe financially too, but that’s the least of my concerns. What really matters is that I am clinically depressed because of these happenings. Yes, I have only myself to blame for my actions, but my self-worth has been diminished countless times by the actions of near and dear ones that stole pieces of my soul.”
