Emami East Bengal produced a fine display of attacking football to prevail over traditional rival Mohun Bagan Super Giant 2-1 in a quarterfinal of the 134th Durand Cup at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Sunday.
Surprise package
East Bengal will take on tournament debutant Diamond Harbour FC, which surprised Jamshedpur FC earlier in the day, in the second semifinal at the same venue on Wednesday.
East Bengal went ahead in the 38th minute when Dimitrios Diamantakos, who came in as a 17th-minute substitute for an injured Hamid Ahadad, converted a penalty.
The Greek forward scored again soon after the break to double East Bengal’s in the 52nd minute.
Bagan pulled one back through Anirudh Thapa in the 68th minute but that was not enough to stop East Bengal from securing a well-deserved win.
Upset victory
Diamond Harbour sprung a big surprise by downing former ISL League Shield winner Jamshedpur FC 2-0 at the latter’s home ground JRD Tata Sports Complex to continue its remarkable journey.
Sairuatkima’s brace
Sairuatkima struck twice in the first half to put Diamond Harbour in control. The club from West Bengal put up a good defensive performance in the second half to thwart the Jamshedpur attacks.
The results: Quarterfinals: At Jamshedpur: Jamshedpur FC 0 lost to Diamond Harbour FC 2 (Sairuatkima 3, 41).
At Kolkata: East Bengal 2 (Dimitrios Diamantakos 38-pen, 52) bt Mohun Bagan Super Giant 1 (Anirudh Thapa 68).
