War 2 Box Office Collection Day 1: War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR and Kiara Advani, opened to poor reviews on Thursday. It seems like the poor word of mouth surrounding the film’s release has affected its box office numbers as well. As per the industry tracker Sacnilk, the film made Rs 52.5 crore on its opening day of release, and while that number sounds almost as good as Pathaan, it is indeed concerning. Out of the Rs 52.5 crore, the Hindi share is just Rs 29 crore, and the Telugu share is Rs 23.25 crore. For comparison, Saiyaara, headlined by two newcomers, made Rs 21.5 crore on its first day of release. It was expected that War 2 would have a big opening in Telugu states because it marks Jr NTR’s debut in a Bollywood film, but since the film is a part of a massive Bollywood franchise, and stars Hrithik, the opening of Rs 29 crore seems a bit disappointing. The first War film made Rs 51 crore just from its Hindi version on day one.

War 2 had around 1100 and 1400 shows in Mumbai and Delhi-NCR region, respectively, with around 22 and 31 percent occupancy respectively. In Hyderabad, the film had around 500 shows in Telugu, with around 77 percent occupancy. War 2 has clashed against Rajinikanth-starrer Coolie, which made around Rs 65 crore on its opening day. War 2’s opening figures are a big concern for YRF, who just had a massive hit with debutants Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda. Their film, Saiyaara, made over Rs 322 crore nett in India in four weeks.
The first War, directed by Siddharth Anand and co-starring Tiger Shroff, made Rs 53 crore on its opening day, with Rs 51 crore just from the Hindi version. The previous Spy Universe film, Tiger 3, starring Salman Khan, released on the day of Diwali, which was a Sunday, and opened at Rs 44.5 crore. Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, which was one of the biggest hits of 2023, opened at Rs 57 crore and the Hindi share here was at Rs 55 crore.

War 2’s reviews and audience reactions haven’t been positive so far, and the film would hope to make the most of an extended holiday weekend to make up for it. The last time when a YRF film got a big opening but crashed massively on the second day was Thugs of Hindostan. The Aamir Khan-starrer made Rs 52.25 crore on its opening day, out of which Rs 50 crore came from Hindi, but on the second day, it witnessed a 44 percent drop. The films’ theatrical run ended with Rs 151.3 crore at the domestic box office.
War 2 also stars Kiara Advani, and Ashutosh Rana among others. The film has been directed by Ayan Mukerji, who previously directed the mega-budget misfire Brahmastra, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. Alia will headline the next Spy Universe film, Alpha.
