A powerful 8.7 magnitude earthquake hit Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula on Wednesday which has triggered tsunami warnings across the Pacific islands, Russia and Japan. The US Geological Survey has confirmed a tsunami and issued a tsunami warning in parts of Alaska. The tsunami warning remains in effect for the Samalga Pass near the state’s Aleutian Islands. Meanwhile, the Japanese government has issued an emergency warning after upgrading the tsunami advisory to tsunami warning following the earthquake.
Earthquake in Russia: The 8.7 magnitude earthquake in Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula was “serious and the strongest in decades of tremors,” said Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov. The governor added that as per preliminary reports, there were no injuries reported but a kindergarten has been damaged. The USGS said the earthquake was shallow at a depth of 19.3 kilometers, and was centred about 125 km east-southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

Evacuation orders: Japan has ordered to immediately evacuate parts of the country, warning its citizens that tsunami waves are approaching the coasts, NHK reported. Tsunami warnings, issued by the Japanese authorities, remains in effect for a major stretch of Japan’s eastern Pacific coast, from Hokkaido’s eastern Pacific coast down to Wakayama Prefecture.
