Mr. Khandre, in his letter on Tuesday, stated that he learnt through the media that a 35-year-old elephant, named Balanna, had been suffering from an infection allegedly due to the negligence of staff taking care of the animal. Similarly, negligence in treatment of another elephant named Sagar, who had suffered four injuries, was also alleged.
The Minister had stated on several occasions earlier that he had instructed officers to hire a veterinarian on a contract basis if there was no dedicated veterinarian for the elephant camp. He directed the PCCF to take immediate measures for the hiring of a veterinarian if required.
Additionally, Mr. Khandre asked the officer to submit a comprehensive report on the allegations of negligence by the staff, along with suitable recommendations for disciplinary action against the erring officials within 10 days.
