Smriti Irani and Amar Upadhyay led Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, which returned to Indian television after 25 years, on July 29th. While the show has leaped in terms of the story, Ekta Kapoor has retained a few original elements like some actors from the original cast, and also the overall look and feel of the show. That’s exactly what also seemed to work for Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2 as it premiered last week. The audience hailed the show, and Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi seems to have taken the top spot on the TRP chart too.

According to several media reports, the BARC data suggests that Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi garnered a TRP of 2.5. This has been the highest TRP any Hindi GEC show has gotten at its launch in the last five years. Earlier, Anupamaa and Tarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah enjoyed the highest TRPs of 2.1, while Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata had a TRP of 2. Earlier in the week, JioHotstar’s Head of TV Distribution, Piyush Goyal, had shared on LinkedIn, “Your support made this possible. Together, we’ve made Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi the biggest Hindi GEC fiction show launch in the last five years with an impressive 2.5 TVR. This is your win as much as ours.”

Recently, actress Smriti Irani spoke to Times Now about the show’s TRP and said that she is not fully relying on them. She even recalled how the show had set a standard on the TRP charts 25 years back. Sharing that they enjoyed a TRP of as high as 31, their worst ever TRP had been 22. Today, the shows don’t see these kinds of numbers. Amar Upadhyay had also exclusively spoken to SCREEN, where he had shared that back in 2000, the show used to enjoy a TRP of 32 and it had even overtaken Amitabh Bachchan’s KBC within three months of its launch.
Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi met a welcome reaction from fans who pointed out how the show had not aged at all. Many got nostalgic about how the Ekta Kapoor show brought families back together, sitting in front of their TV sets to watch the show. Many even lauded Mihir and Tulsi’s chemistry and said that the show brought back so many wonderful memories. The show’s recent episodes have been getting mixed reactions, though. One fan commented on the latest episode one of the fans wrote, “Please don’t make this Anupamaa Part 2.” Another fan asked, “Will this show only show its characters crying all the time?”
Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi airs on Star Plus and Jio Hotstar from Monday to Sunday at 10:30 pm.
