Giving déjà vu of his character Cyber Patrick alias Battery from TJ Gnanavel’s Rajinikanth-starrer Vettaiyan (2024), Fahadh Faasil enters the scene here with the line, “Some houses… I feel like they’re calling me. Those are the only ones I ever break into.” Not only is he a stylish thief, but also a smarty-pants, posing brain teasers to himself like, “How do fish that live deep underwater end up as food for cranes soaring in the sky?”
As he prowls for his next target, he comes across a late middle-aged man (Vadivelu) withdrawing a huge sum from an ATM. Hoping to lure him into a trap, Fahadh offers to drop Vadivelu wherever he wants. Learning that the latter is grappling with early-stage Alzheimer’s disease only makes him happier, assuming it won’t be difficult to fleece him. “We have been riding in the same gear for so long now. Why don’t you change the gear?” Vadivelu asks Fahadh as the promo takes a steep turn into thriller territory. From then on, a long shadow of danger looms over the two characters, with the police also entering the scene. But where all this will lead them, only the film can reveal.
Maareesan is helmed by renowned Malayalam television serial director Sudheesh Sankar, who made his film directorial debut in 2009 with the Tamil action drama Aarumaname. Later, he directed the Malayalam action comedy Villali Veeran (2014), featuring Dileep and Namitha Pramod in the lead roles. Not only did Villali Veeran open to widespread negative reviews, but it has also drawn significant criticism over the years for its disgustingly sexist content.
